Glenfarne Woods

This site lies on the shore of Lough Macnean which forms the natural boundary between the counties of Leitrim, Cavan and Fermanagh. The wood forms part of what was once the Tottenham Estate, which existed from 1780 to 1919. The “big house” known as Glenfarne Hall was built in the 1800s. The estate was later acquired as a hunting retreat for Sir Edward Harland, founder of the Harland and Wolfe shipyard in Belfast. A feature of the trails is the presence of a number of sculptures which form a section of the Lough Macnean sculpture trail. The sculpture trail comprises eleven pieces which are to be found around upper and lower Lough Macnean. There are also a number of other features along or adjacent to the trails, notably, the Ladies Rest, Myles Big Stone and the Badgers Well.

Glenfarne Woods - Forest bathing & Sit Spots design

Phase 1

The project aims at the development of a recreation spacer for the general public, with walking trails, picnic areas, viewing platforms and forest bathing/sit spot areas. The project is developed in partnership with Coillte and Leitrim County Council.

My project began with communication from Coillte and the company that has been commissioned to develop a recreation centre in the Glenfarne Woods, ILC. A plan of action for the project was prepared and introduced to the customer.

Phase 2

Glenfarne Woods - Forest bathing & Sit Spots design

I have visited the site in July 2023 to ensure the space is suitable for mindful and relaxing forest bathing experience.

I was able to walk the existing paths, take photos of the area of interest, work with map and GPS references.

Phase 3

After the visit, I included the recommendations, risk factors and additional ideas in the report. The document comprised photos, with a description of the proposed forest bathing trail, directions for proper description, information on health benefits of forest bathing and additional proposal of a nature walk/educational walk in the area.
